STEP 5: AWARD AND IMPLEMENTATION

Award & Implementation: Common Philanthropic Activities

Award includes communicating grant decisions to grantees and declined applicants, and designing appropriate grant terms and agreements. Implementation includes monitoring grant implementation and, most importantly, all the additional support the foundation offers its grantees beyond grant dollars – providing capacity building, technical assistance and leadership development; offering access to spaces, organizations and people they might not otherwise have; and influencing the field of philanthropy.

QUESTIONS FOR THE JUSTICE FUNDER:

  • How can I balance foundation monitoring and legal requirements and the burden they pose on grantees? How can I best support grantees in fulfilling those requests?
  • How can I broaden grantees’ visibility to other potential funders?
  • How can I engage with grantees during our formal grant relationship to leverage further philanthropic support for them?

TRANSITIONAL PRACTICE

Leveraging tools and resources (e.g., communications, convening power, etc.) at my disposal to better support grantees

TRANSFORMATIONAL PRACTICE

Co-creating grant expectations and accountability with grant recipients and movement leaders
