STEP 4: MAKING THE CASE

Making the Case: Common Philanthropic Activities

Making the case is the preparation of funding recommendations for grant decision-makers. Most often this includes preparing docket write ups that summarize the proposal and rationale for funding, and presenting this material to a foundation’s internal leadership team and ultimately, its board of directors or other decision-making body.

QUESTIONS FOR THE JUSTICE FUNDER:

  • How can I summarize complex issues and nuanced approaches clearly, utilizing a rationale that resonates with decision-makers?
  • How can I meet decision-makers where they are while furthering their analysis and understanding of root causes and systemic issues?
  • Who are the internal and external allies that can support me when presenting an unprecedented proposal? (e.g., Are there any funder allies who would also support the proposal to minimize my foundation leadership’s trepidation about pursuing a new direction?)
