Funding Movement Building: Bay Area Approaches

In 2013, Justice Funders produced “Funding Movement Building: Bay Area Approaches” which detailed the findings from our 2012 survey of Bay Area Social Justice philanthropies.

The survey sought to answer one of the single most important questions facing members of the Bay Area Justice Funders Network – Justice Funders’ regional community for learning and action: “How do we fund social justice movement building?”

Our goals were to learn about what issues, work or geographies are prioritized, where there may be opportunities for coordination, and to establish a baseline for the amount of philanthropic dollars granted by Bay Area philanthropies to advance social justice issues and movements.

The stories and case studies shared in this report offer paths forward for foundations to intentionally and strategically increase their investment in social justice movement building.
