The political and economic shifts of the last decade, through the global recession and partial recovery, have led to greater awareness of the chronic problems of poverty and inequality. The latest analysis of household wealth shows that wealth inequality in the U.S. is higher now than at any other point in our nation’s history and that the racial wealth gap has continued to get worse, even through the economic recovery.
In addition, despite the abundant evidence from Obama’s victories proving that the U.S. population has fundamentally changed, many progressives and Democrats continue to waste millions of dollars chasing white swing voters. The explosive population growth of people of color in America over the past fifty years has laid the foundation for a New American Majority consisting of progressive people of color (23 percent of all eligible voters) and progressive whites (28 percent of all eligible voters). These two groups make up 51 percent of all eligible voters in America right now and that majority is growing larger every day. Failing to properly appreciate this reality, progressives are at risk of missing this moment in history—and losing.
What does this all mean? How do we build progressive power? In addition, learn about the ambitious plan more than 20 front-line Bay Area organizations are developing towards a regional power building strategy through Bay Area Rising.
* Bay Area Rising is a new network of experienced, high-impact, community-led organizations that are joining forces to protect and empower low-income communities through civic engagement, voter mobilization, and public policy change--to discuss current conditions and how people of color and progressive whites add up to a new political majority.
